BrewSmarter Syphonless Wine Starter KitSTEP 1 CHECK AND ASSEMBLE COMPONENTS
Your kit should contain:
- 2 by graduated 25 litre fermenters and lids, each fitted with:
- bubbler airlock and grommet, and
- a tap that fits the tube and is compatible with the bottle filling stick
- bottle filling stick
- 1.75 M PVC tubing
- 2 by large liquid crystal thermometers (you don't have to open the fermenters to take a temperature reading, and the large LCD thermometers are easy to read)
- Stevenson Reeves hydrometer
- quality glass trial jar
- stirring paddle
- twin lever metal wine corker
- 25 quality no soak corks
- 100g VWP cleaner/sterilizer
Place the grommets in the fermenter lids, and then insert the airlocks. When filling the airlock with water, fill less than half way.
Attach the two Liquid Crystal Thermometers by peeling off the backing strip and sticking them (horizontally so that they are not affected by heating belts) to the outside of the fermenters about half way between the taps and the tops of the fermenters.
Attach the taps to the fermenters. Do not over tighten or the threads on the tap / nut can be damaged. Fill the fermenter with water and make sure the tap is water tight.
STEP 2 STERILIZE EQUIPMENT
Open the Sterilizer. Make up a solution by dissolving 1 - 2 teaspoons of Sterilizer per gallon (4.54 litres) into warm water and fill the fermenter to the top with it. Leave to soak for 20 minutes, open the tap and allow about a litre to drain through the tap system. Leave for a further 10 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with cold tap water. Don't use boiling water and never add sterilizer solution to the wine.
STEP 3 CLOSE THE TAP
Make sure the tap is fully closed before going any further.
STEP 4 MAKING THE WINE
Follow the instructions in the wine kit, making sure you sterilize all components that come into contact with the wine before using them. When wine has to be moved from one fermenter to another, simply attach one end of the (sterilized) PVC tube to the tap of the fermenter containing the wine, place the other end of the tube in the other fermenter, and open the tap. Make sure the tap in the receiving fermenter is closed. Be sure to sterilize wine bottles before filling them with wine.
TIP: dishwashers are very effective at cleaning dirty wine bottles, no need for bottle brushes!
